In a recent staff meeting, our Creative director Jason Miller brought up an article he recently read from Medium.com. In the article NO DICKHEADS! A Guide To Building Happy, Healthy, and Creative Teams, the authors stress the importance of creating a space where creativity flourishes. They set a basic list of rules to ensure their team actually works as a team, and that creativity is not stifled by egos.
Some of the rules are pretty basic, like ‘say good morning and good night,’ or ‘eat together’, and others more complex, like ‘be optimistic, embrace failure, and laugh more.’ Although sometimes it is hard to focus on the bigger picture when running through the hectic day-to-day of the marketing world, we at WJ couldn’t agree more with this list and its intention.
The idea of creating a studio culture that embraces teamwork and fun, while still handling the day-to-day in a professional way is what keeps us coming to work everyday excited for new challenges. We are a true team, through and through. There is no room for egos here; we tackle every project with fresh eyes and a humble appreciation for the challenge ahead.
Our office is an open, welcoming space where our team can bounce ideas off each other, or better yet, draw them out on one of our white-board walls. We are here to help each other out, even if it is just a laugh in the middle of a long day.
Our daily social lunch is often interrupted by our highly competitive bocce ball games, nicknamed the Grapefruit League. A little competition (not to mention a healthy dose of smack talk) strengthens our bonds as a team, and gives a nice outdoor break in the middle of the day.
We could go on and on about the culture at WJ, as it is the reason we strive as individuals. We come in each day with our individual talents and experience, and openly share them with each other to work together as a greater team.
In the upcoming months, keep track of our Twitter and Facebook accounts, as we want to share our studio culture with you!
